What is Caller ID Spoofing and how does it work?

Caller ID Spoofing is the act of calling someones phone and changing the Caller ID to be a number other than yours. Using a Fake Caller ID is completely legal and is a great way to hide your identity when making calls. Is using a Fake Caller ID Legal?

Yes, provided you are using Caller ID Spoofing for legitimate reasons (depending on your country of residence) caller id spoofing is completely legal. The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009, put forth in 2010, prohibits caller ID spoofing for the purposes of defrauding or otherwise causing harm. Such reasons including but are not limited to: transmitting misleading or inaccurate caller ID information with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongfully obtain anything of value.

The History of Caller ID Spoofing

Back before Caller ID existed there was obviously no need for Caller ID Spoofing or hiding your phone number when placing calls. At that time when you placed a call the person receiving a call didn't know who was calling. In the 1990's *69 was launched where users could find out what number called them after the call was complete.

Once Caller ID became popular and people could see who was calling before they answered the phones there was an instant demand to prevent this. People could no longer make calls anonymously and the most phone companies could offer their users was the ability to have their name/number show up as private. Obviously this wasn't a perfect solution and the majority of "Private Calls" one would receive were from telemarketers and legitimate people using "Private" as their caller ID would often never get their call picked answered. The demand for Fake Caller ID was there and luckily in the 2000's there were a couple of companies were offering this ground breaking solution to make a call to a user, remain anonymous without giving strangers their personal phone number.
